The issue of translator's cultural identity is highly sensitive,the orientation of which exerts a considerable impact on translation.This paper attempts to deconstruct the alter ego-the second self in translator's identity of David Hawkes,who is also a sinologist,by reading his translation The Story of the Stone,in expectation of shedding some light on translation study,especially on Hong Lou Meng's translation,in order to promote the cultural communication between China and the western world.
